CSS Suxxx

Well, my camera has decided not to work today, so maybe you will see the Clay Aiken shirt later.

But for now: here is a CD review! Or my attempt at one.

Do you know who CSS is? Their full name is Cansei de Ser Sexy, and in Portuguese that means "Tired of Being Sexy." They're from Brazil. Here they are:

And here is their first full-length CD:

Maybe you've heard of them. Even if you don't think you have, you have almost certainly heard one of their songs. Think back to November, when iPhones were still a huge deal. CSS's song "Music Is My Hot, Hot Sex" was featured on one of Apple's commercials. Remember? It's the one that went "My music is where/ I'd like you to touch".

So, way back in November, I went and bought the entire CD because I had a little extra money to spare. I wasn't expecting anything too extravagant, so when I put the CD in my stereo and pressed play I thought that maybe I was on crack. What I heard was:
"(Long guitar squeal) C... S... S... SUXXX!"
(According to the track list, there are three x's.)
Then a whole bunch of chords and some more people chanting "CSS suxxx!" It was all very jumpy and loud. Normally I can't stand music like that, but it sounded like the members of the band were having loads of fun, so I kept listening.

If you like bands that all sound the same then I wouldn't invest in a copy of CSS. They certainly have a unique sound, one that they're rather well-known for. It's not exactly Animal Collective, but there aren't a lot of CD's that have song titles like "Fuckoff Is Not The Only Thing You Have to Show", lyrics like "My art is called egocentric soft porno / or maybe it's just narcissism", and sounds like accordions and hand claps and synths. It all sounds like a dance club gone wrong, but that's why it's fun.

Actually, you know how I said you shouldn't get this if you like bands that are all disturbingly similar? I changed my mind. This CD would restore life to your otherwise tired, somewhat bland music collection.

Plus the CD came out on my 14th birthday which makes it extra-special.

CSS recently released a new CD (Donkey) but definitely, definitely listen to this one first. It'll allow you to make a fair comparison between the new and the old.

Er... and that's it. I suppose it's more of an opinion than a review, but as a final word I'll say: this CD is the shit.
